Nampa City Council votes to participate in Governor’s Public Safety Initiative

Nampa City Council

On Tues., September 22, the City of Nampa received additional guidance provided by the US Dept of Treasury’s Office and the Office of Inspector General. Based upon this new information, the Nampa City Council reconvened this morning to reconsider their position related to participation in the Governor’s Public Safety Initiative (GPSI).

The GPSI allocated federal CARES Act funding towards reimbursing public safety payroll expenses related to COVID-19 between March and December 2020. Mayor and Council listened to updated information from Finance Director Doug Racine and Legal Counsel Mark Hilty. The program was created to reimburse a portion of first responder expenses, resulting in a single year of property tax relief for residents in the cities and counties which participate.

Council voted (3-2) to reverse their prior decision made September 17 and accept the Governor’s Public Safety Initiative funding. The City of Nampa anticipates receiving $9,242,699 and will be used to offset public safety labor costs. The offset to our public safety labor costs will benefit the citizens of Nampa by providing a one-time property tax relief which will be reflected in the soon-to-be-released Canyon County property tax bill.

Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling shared, “The new information, which was published earlier this week, addressed the concerns initially expressed related to the acceptance of these funds. It was important for Council to have an opportunity to take the newly released information from the US Dept of Treasury and the Office of Inspector General into consideration. I am pleased the Nampa City Council action will result in a one-year property tax savings for our citizens.”
