Statement from Mayor Kling

YouTube Video:

The City of Nampa, along with the rest of the country, has been experiencing unprecedented times over the past few weeks while responding to the Coronavirus. Following Southwest District Health guidelines, we have closed the Ford Idaho Center, Nampa Civic Center, Nampa Rec Center, Nampa Public Library, and Nampa City Hall to visitors. Our employees continue to work and serve the City. Departments are fully functioning while implementing best practices to limit the spread of this illness in our community.

We have received feedback from Nampa citizens and wish to thank them for taking the time to reach out to my office. Your comments and concerns are important to me. Some citizens are supportive and thankful that city leadership has recommended voluntary social distancing rather than mandatory action through an official ordinance. Others feel we should be taking stronger action.

As Mayor, I have been in daily communication with other elected officials, local and state health authorities and our emergency management teams. Please know we are following the guidance of Southwest District Health, who are making decisions with science and facts. As the local heath authority, they have the ability to order isolation, quarantine, shelter in place and will do so if or when the science and the situation warrants it.

We are asking citizens to do their part by taking personal and professional responsibility. If our residents govern themselves, the state or local governing entities do not need to. To be clear, I am asking Nampa residents to follow these guidelines:

  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • If you have a compromised immune system, stay home.
  • If you go out in public, limit your physical distance from others to 6 feet apart and limit group sizes to 10 or less.
  • Practice frequent hand washing for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
I would like to ask our restaurants to move to carry-out or maintain the 6-foot distance so we don’t have to implement an ordinance. I am asking our law enforcement to check in at social gathering places to ensure they are following the recommended social distancing.

If you are uncomfortable with any business or location who is not adhering to these actions, do not visit them.

Please do these things now, voluntarily, and for the protection of our community and economy. There could come a time when Nampa City Council chooses to mandate certain restrictions. But for now, we are following the recommendations of our local health authorities and asking each Nampa resident to self-govern. I love our community and I know you do, too. Thank you for supporting your local community by doing what’s right.
