Idaho Family Reading Week is November 8-14, 2021. It is a time when families are encouraged to read together. This year’s theme, “Believe and Achieve,” will be celebrated at public and school libraries across the Gem State.
The Nampa Public Library will bring Idaho Family Reading Week to our community by distributing “Believe and Achieve” packets to children aged pre-K through seventh grade, beginning Monday, Nov. 8, at the first-floor information desk. Packets include a bingo card, a “Believe and Achieve” journal, early literacy and growth mindset tips for parents, a “color your own” bookmark, and several fun handouts. The first 100 children to report completed bingo cards may enter a drawing to win a free book.
The celebration continues with the following online events:
“Idaho Family Reading Week reminds parents, grandparents, and all caregivers of the importance of reading with, or to, the child in their life. For example, family reading experiences give children the chance to hear and learn about new words which expands their vocabulary. Family Reading Week is also a great time for families who may not have been into the library lately to check out all of the things we offer that go beyond books, such as DVDs, educational kits, and video games,” said Laura Abbott, Youth Services Supervisor at the Nampa Public Library.
Whether it’s learning something new, serving a neighbor, or embarking on an adventure with a great read, families will enjoy a special week of ways to “believe and achieve” at their library during Idaho Family Reading Week.
State Librarian Stephanie Bailey-White said, “As we navigate another uncertain school year, Idaho Family Reading Week is a great reminder to families that reading done in the home is extremely important for children to maintain, and even increase, their reading level and competency. For young children, reading books aloud helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to comprehend the written word. Reading also stimulates a youngster’s imagination and expands their knowledge of the world.”
