Crack Sealing & Chip Sealing

What is chip sealing? 

Chip sealing is a common, cost effective, pavement maintenance practice that extends pavement life and provides a good driving surface at one-fourth to one-fifth the cost of a conventional asphalt overlay. Chip seal is a resurfacing treatment that places a thin layer of asphalt emulsion, followed by the application of 1/2" or 1/4" rock chips. A "fog seal" is applied to lock the new surface in place. Chip Seal provides a course wearing surface with increased tire traction improving safety during winter driving conditions and helping to protect and lengthen the life of the asphalt driving surface.

What can you expect during the chip seal process? 

Chip seal is a multi-step process that includes sealing existing cracks I pavements, sweeping excess chips, applying an oil application to control loose rock chips and dust, and completing the process with striping.

Once the signage is in place, this process will take a minimum of two weeks and can extend to several weeks, and we ask you to please refrain from parking on the streets and subdivisions until the process is complete.

How can you help? 

  1. Be patient & drive cautiously while crew is at work – 20 mph in chips seal zone.
  2. Parking on designated streets during the chip seal project is prohibited. Once signage is removed, street parking may be resumed. All non-compliant vehicles will be towed by Crossroads Towing
  3. Trim trees & shrubs on the curbside. Trees must be pruned 14 ft. above the street.
  4. Temporarily set times to water between 6 pm – 12 am. Moisture on the roads prevents oil from adhering to the street.

All non-compliant residents will be subject to fine. Idaho Code 18-3908.


City streets are on a maintenance schedule that rotates through the entire City every 7 years. Rotating the zones and coordinating necessary work throughout the Public Works Department saves taxpayer money and ensures that roads are maintained equitably. The scheduled crack and chip sealing for the year typically begins in June.
