This work is part of a multi-year process to improve I-84 in Canyon County. ITD will replace the Middleton Road Overpass as part of these improvements. Improvements for the project include:

  • One lane in each direction on the overpass.
  • Wider shoulders on both sides to accommodate bicycles.
  • Sidewalk on the east side of the bridge.
  • 17’ vertical clearance on I-84.
  • A traffic signal at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Middleton Road.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1.  Why is the Idaho Transportation Department closing the Middleton Road & Cherry Lane intersection and how long will the closure last? ITD is closing the intersection of Middleton Road and Cherry Lane to raise the elevation of the intersection to match the height of the new Middleton Overpass. The Middleton Overpass will be higher to increase the vertical clearance on I-84. The closure will last approximately two months.

  2. Why is the work necessary and time-sensitive? If the grade is not raised, the overpass will be unable to connect to Middleton Road. It is time sensitive because new asphalt pavement is being placed at the intersection. Asphalt must be placed during warmer temperatures. If work on the intersection is delayed, it will delay other parts of the project later on, and would likely delay future projects to improve I-84. The I-84 improvements

  3. Why is the full closure necessary? Can't ITD keep one lane open? The intersection will be raised by five feet. Raising an intersection requires working on the whole intersection at one time. There is no way to keep one lane open.

  4. What is the detour route? The detour will be in place from Middleton Road to Linden Road and Northside Boulevard to Cherry Lane until the Midland/Ustick roundabout is finished in late September. Once finished, the detour route will be in place from Middleton Road to Ustick Road to Midland Boulevard.

  5. Why is ITD closing the Middleton & Cherry intersection when the Midland/Ustick Roundabout construction is taking place at the same time? Did ITD and Nampa Highway not coordinate? ITD and the Nampa Highway District have been coordinating for a couple of years during the design of the Middleton Road Overpass. The Midland/Ustick roundabout project was supposed to be complete in July 2020. Unfortunately, the public utilities were not relocated in time and it delayed the project by two months. ITD and Nampa Highway District are continuing to coordinate.
