Skimming Devices Press Release

On Dec. 12, the Nampa Police Department was made aware of a skimming device located at a local bank. The device was found on Dec. 10 at about 2 p.m. near the drive-up automated teller machine (ATM) at the bank.

“This device was disguised to look like part of the guardrail next to the ATM and was painted to match as well,” said Sgt. Tim Riha. It consisted of a metal bar with magnets to hold it to the guard rail and inside was a small camera, other electronic parts, a memory card and a battery.

“It is unknown how or if the device was also capable of recording financial transaction card information. There may have been an associated device attached to the ATM as well, but that is not known at this time,” Riha said.

The Nampa Police is continuing their investigation into this incident. We would like to remind citizens to be careful when using ATM’s, gas pumps and places where they use their card to make transactions. Pay attention to the machines themselves and if anything looks suspicious, do not use your card and report the suspicion to the business or the police.

“This device was located by a customer using the ATM and who saw something that did not look right and reported it to the bank,” said Riha. “We wanted to make the public aware in case there are other skimming devices placed around our community.”
