The City of Nampa primarily maintains its streets with crack sealing and chip sealing. Crack sealing is the most cost effective pavement maintenance technique. It prevents water from entering the road base and extends pavement life by 3-5 years. After crack sealing, the City often follows with chip sealing in order to extend the time before a conventional asphalt overlay is needed. A chip seal is one fourth to one fifth the cost of a conventional asphalt overlay, therefore street maintenance costs are greatly reduced with this practice.
City streets are on a maintenance schedule that rotates through the entire City every 7 years. Rotating the zones and coordinating necessary work throughout the Public Works Department saves taxpayer money and ensures that roads are maintained equitably. The scheduled crack and chip sealing for the year typically begins in June.
